In an episode of The Simpsons, an Indian immigrant takes his citizenship test. The last question he is asked is about the cause of the Civil War. Here’s what was said:
Exam Proctor: All right, here's your last question: What was the cause of the Civil War? Apu: Actually, there were numerous causes. Aside from the obvious schism between abolitionists and anti-abolitionists, economic factors, both domestic and international, played a significant... Exam Proctor: Hey, Mate. Apu: Yeah. Exam Proctor: Just say slavery. Apu: Slavery it is, sir. Yes, I am a citizen!
What do you think? Was the Civil War only over slavery, like the proctor said, or was there a something else, like Apu was saying? Post your thoughts about who you think is right and why. Feel free to comment on other students’ comments, as well.
I think they are both right. Slavery was the overall reason for the Civil War, but other issues did arise like the differences b/w the two parts of the nation, trade, economics…but in the end, slavery drove all of those issues.
Yes, because there were many reasons for the civil war including slavery,economic, culture, constitution, and states rights.

I think there was something else like Apu said because the nation didn’t divide just because of slavery . There were other economic and cultral reasons
Referring to the Simpsons Apu situation we think that it is mainly based on slavery like the exam proctor said.

I have to disagree with you Kenne’t & Keyla G. because if you paid attention in class you would know we talked about various reasons for the civil war.So yea that’s all I have to say.

The civil war was actually caused by of a lot of things and just not slavery and I know this because we have already talked about it and I researched.
No, I don’t think the civil war was all about slavery,it was also adout ecinomic,cultural,and constitutional reasons.
I think that it was only over slavery because people didn’t like the fact of slaves for labor.

I think Apu was right because in our social studies class told us many other reasons for the civil war not just slavery alone.Also i just wanted to I was a great Apu so now I’m done.

I think Apu is right. The Civil War revolved around slavery, but that doesn’t mean EVERYONE thought so. Some might have wanted to start the war because of economic problems. Land was a big predicament, too. Apu managed to give more details, rather than just slavery. I think the war revolved around everything Apu said. So, Go Apu!
I think the cause of the civil war is that who wanted slavery and who did not. SO APU answer was apart of how the civil war began. The north live off of industry. And the south live off of agricultural. Also one live in villages and the other did factories

Well Apu was right because the Civil War was mostly being fought over who should have slavery.And economic reasons. Most women were left with the businesses and the plantations.
Blacks were paid less than white soilders.
The Civil War started over slavery because they wanted to fight over who had slaves as well as for economic reasons. During the Civil War woman were also left to take care of the farms and businesses. Black solidiers were paid less than white soldiers.
